Rejuvenation cure at Jungfernstieg

The prominent historic building ensemble Jungfernstieg/corner Grosse Bleichen in Hamburg will be converted and extensively renovated by the end of 2020. It should be back in use at the beginning of next year. The heart of the building complex is the palace designed by the Hamburg architect Haller for the (former) Dresdner Bank. The Hamburg Office for the Protection of Historical Monuments monitored this project very attentively, because it was important to preserve the historical architecture from the imperial era and, at the same time, adapt it carefully to today's rental requirements.

As part of this modernisation project, the façade of the "Haller-Haus" (Jungfernstieg 22) will be restored and that of the "Kempinski-Haus" (Jungfernstieg 24) completely redesigned. Both facades will be fitted with numerous new windows. Slim views and excellent thermal insulation were not subject to the aesthetic requirements of the preservation order.

Forster unico was chosen, not least because the window elements in the venerable bank building Haller Haus were to be given a very special surface. All surfaces of the frame, casement and glazing beads are planked with bronze sheets. In a specially developed process, the metal sheets produced for each element were glued to the powder-coated surfaces of the frames to fit exactly. A special two-component adhesive system is used, which is characterised by high strength and excellent durability. In order to come as close as possible to the contours of the forster unico profiles, the sheets are finely milled on one side before folding. This allows almost sharp-edged bending radii to be achieved.

In order to meet the high demands of the architects and the protection of historical monuments, the facades and windows were sampled in advance in the form of 1:1 mockups. These samples served ultimately as the basis for the design with all its visual characteristics, technical features and architectural details.

Around 30 tubular steel frame elements will be used in the next construction phase of the interior work. Numerous door elements in the forster fuego light and forster presto RS systems secure the corridors and building parts against fire and smoke spread. The optical appearance of the windows on the outside was preserved by planking some elements with bronze sheets. Once planning is completed, the execution will probably start in Q3/2020.
